SFPCF April 2026 Update

  • April 6, 2026
  • Northern Station, SFPCF Community Update

Celebrating Community, Cherry Blossom Season & the Northern Station Officers Who Serve San Francisco

Spring is springing, and we’re excited to highlight the Northern Station District, one of the city’s most diverse and densely populated jurisdictions, with many high-occupancy dwellings, including large apartment buildings, senior citizens’ residences, residential hotels, and public housing complexes.

It encompasses several distinct neighborhoods, including the Civic Center, Western Addition, Hayes Valley, Japantown, Cathedral Hill, Polk Gulch, Russian Hill, Pacific Heights, Cow Hollow, and the Marina.

It’s also a favored location for street fairs and cultural celebrations, including the Fillmore Street Jazz Festival, Union Street Fair, Clusterfest Comedy Expo, SF Pride Celebration, Bay to Breakers, Fleet Week, and the symphony and opera Openings.

Next month, the city’s beloved Cherry Blossom Festival, running the weekends of April 10-12 and 17-19, turns 59 and is expected to draw 250,000 attendees to celebrate spring and Japanese culture. The blossoms’ brief, brilliant bloom is a reminder of impermanence, beauty, and renewal.

Other 2026 events coming up near Northern Station include:

  • April: Pickin’ on Polk Block Party
  • May: Bus Stop Anniversary Block Party, Bay to Breakers, and Union Street Fair
  • June: Juneteenth Festival and Pride Weekend
  • July: 4th of July Events, Fillmore Jazz Fest, and the Civic Center’s Largest Live Boxing Event in the World
  • August: Nihonmachi Street Fair
  • October: Fleet Week

A MESSAGE FROM NORTHERN STATION’S CAPTAIN

San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) Captain Patrick McCormick grew up riding BART alone at 12, navigating a map to meet his dad for lunch at Original Joe’s on Taylor Street, watching San Francisco pass by through the window.

He had no idea he’d spend the next quarter century working those same streets, or that the city would feel like home.

We sat down with Captain McCormick to discuss what he’s learned (so far!) during his nearly 25 years at the San Francisco Police Department, a career that spans Bayview, Tenderloin, and the Northern Station, as well as leading the SFPD’s human resources and recruiting operations.

WORKING TOGETHER: OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS

The Foundation and Northern Station are proud to work alongside organizations that share our commitment to a safe, connected, and thriving community. Here’s a look at some of the groups we’ve been working with:

The Fillmore Merchants Association supports the Fillmore District, which sits southwest of Nob Hill along 13 tree-lined blocks of Fillmore Street, anchored by the annual Fillmore Jazz Festival and a Saturday Farmers Market.

The neighborhood first rose to prominence after the 1906 earthquake and fire, when City Hall and major department stores relocated to Fillmore Street, the closest intact thoroughfare, transforming single-family Victorians into boarding houses and establishing the dense, culturally rich urban neighborhood it remains today. Known for its Victorian architecture, cultural diversity, and local landmarks such as Jefferson Square Park and Smuggler’s Cove, the Fillmore offers some of the city’s best shopping, dining, and nightlife. The Japantown Community Benefit District (JCBD) supports San Francisco’s historic Japantown through property owner assessments that fund neighborhood cleanliness, business support, and cultural marketing. The district is home to more than 200 small businesses, two hotels, 12 nonprofits, and 15 Legacy Businesses, anchored by the Peace Pagoda, a gift from the people of Japan, and framed by the Japantown Gate featuring the work of renowned artist Ruth Asawa.

The JCBD promotes Japantown as both a destination and a living cultural hub for the Japanese community, drawing visitors into the Japan Center Malls and Kinokuniya Mall while working to sustain the neighborhood’s long-term economic and cultural vitality. (Read our profile blog!)
