We recently delivered 14 new e-bikes to San Francisco Police Department officers at the Taraval, Central, Richmond, and Ingleside Stations, and the response from the field has been immediate.
Officers who’ve started riding them are already telling us what a difference it makes.

It gives officers a different way to patrol San Francisco and engage with the community. Having an e-bike makes it easier for officers to navigate San Francisco’s legendary hills and provides greater mobility and faster response times during patrols. The community loves seeing officers in a different light, not always behind the wheel of a patrol car, but out on the streets and interacting with residents.”
Why E-Bikes Make Sense for a City Like San Francisco
San Francisco’s hills, narrow streets, and dense foot traffic make it a uniquely difficult city to patrol by car alone. E-bikes solve several of those problems at once.
Officers on e-bikes can cover more ground than officers on traditional patrol bicycles, since the electric assist lets them travel further and for longer periods, expanding their patrol routes and increasing their visibility in the community. That extra range matters in a city where a single beat can span steep grades from the Mission to Bernal Heights or Twin Peaks.
Bike patrol can also change the nature of the interaction between officers and residents. They’re positioned to build community trust in a way patrol cars often can’t, since bike patrol places officers in the heart of their communities, facilitating more chances to have positive interactions with residents, while also allowing officers to reach areas not accessible by cars, such as plazas and other confined areas within a city.
There’s an environmental case too. The average passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of CO2 per year, so every patrol mile ridden on an e-bike is a mile that doesn’t carry that tailpipe footprint, a small but real contribution to San Francisco’s climate and air quality goals.
What’s Next for SFPD e-bikes
This first round of e-bikes is just the start. The Foundation is now raising funds to expand the program to more officers and more stations across San Francisco, and every dollar goes directly toward putting more officers on two wheels in the neighborhoods that need them most.
“Every officer we’ve heard from says the same thing: the e-bikes have changed how they connect with the people they serve,” said Ixchel Acosta, Executive Director of the San Francisco Police Community Foundation. “They put officers back at eye level with the neighborhoods they patrol, and that’s where trust gets built, one conversation at a time. This is exactly the kind of investment the Foundation was built for: practical, immediate, and rooted in community connection.
