More than 350 North Beach neighbors filled the Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center’s (TEL HI) playground on Chestnut Street on Saturday, September 12, for the annual Aging and Older Adults Resource Fair.Â
The San Francisco Police Community Foundation (SFPCF) and San Francisco Police Department’s (SFPD) Central Station helped provide lunch, tables, chairs, and event needs, and Central Station officers spent the day meeting and connecting with residents.Â
TEL HI has served North Beach for 136 years and is now focused on 1) promoting stability for families; 2) building skills and self-worth that allow toddlers, youth, and adults to succeed; and 3) supporting seniors in remaining vital and independent. They offer a range of free and low-cost programs, including infant and toddler care, preschool, after-school activities, summer camp, personal development classes, senior programs, community celebrations, and more.Â
“Half the value of a community fair is access to resources,” said Ixchel Acosta, Executive Director of SFPCF. “The other half is 350 neighbors in one room, talking to each other and realizing they’re not on their own. That’s true for the seniors, and it’s true for our SFPD officers too. We’re proud to support community-building across San Francisco.”
This year’s fair connected seniors with 28 community partners, several of them new, offering health, wellness, caregiving, and disability support services. Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and raffle prizes rounded out the afternoon.Â
“Having Central Station officers at the fair, sitting down with our seniors over lunch, is exactly the kind of connection we want to keep building,” said Koletti Leha Ieremia, Director of Senior Program at TEL HI. “It made a difference in creating a welcoming, accessible event.”
