Mayor Daniel Lurie appointed longtime gun safety advocate Mattie Scott to the San Francisco Police Commission and swore in new Commissioner Wilson Leung on Friday. The two appointments bring decades of public safety experience to the commission as the city works to enhance neighborhood safety.
Scott, a national leader in gun violence prevention who lost her youngest son to gun violence, brings 23 years of experience in violence prevention and community activism. She founded and directs Healing 4 Our Families & Our Nation and serves as president of the San Francisco chapter of Mothers-in-Charge and San Francisco Brady California State.
“I’m grateful for this opportunity and eager to work for our city’s future. Together, we’ll make it safer and heal our communities,” Scott said. “This is a city that gets things done, and united, we can overcome our challenges like fentanyl and street violence, paving the way for a brighter tomorrow. We will stop the killing and start the healing.”
Scott’s work has included outreach with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals, collaboration with No More Tears at San Quentin Prison, and engagement with youth, families, and faith-based communities across California.
She has served on multiple boards, including the San Francisco Police Chief’s African American Police Advisory Board.
Wilson Leung, who was approved unanimously by the Board of Supervisors earlier this week, spent over 14 years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney at the Department of Justice. The San Francisco native and UC Berkeley graduate also brings private sector experience from leadership roles at Intel, Uber, and HP.
Leung mentioned that he is “eager to do [his] part to help the San Francisco Police Department succeed in its mission to protect and serve all of San Francisco’s communities.”.
Mayor Lurie emphasized the commissioners’ qualifications for the role, saying, “Wilson Leung is extremely qualified for this role, with 14 years as a federal prosecutor and private sector experience that he will draw on to help our police department keep people safe.”
Furthermore, Mayor Lurie highlighted that “Mattie Scott has dedicated her life to keeping our communities safe and preventing gun violence in San Francisco and across the country.”
Board President Rafael Mandelman praised both appointments. “In November, San Franciscans voted for change, and in his first two appointments to our Police Commission, Mayor Lurie has delivered,” Mandelman said. “Wilson Leung brings more than 14 years’ experience as a federal prosecutor; Mattie Scott is a gun safety legend.
The two commissioners will work alongside their colleagues on the Police Commission to advance the department’s ongoing reform efforts while ensuring safety for all San Francisco neighborhoods.
“While there is a long way to go, San Franciscans know we are on the right track to making our city safer,” said Mayor Lurie. “Today, we recognize two people who will draw on decades of public safety experience to help us write this next chapter.”
