For the first time in the history of the San Francisco Police Department, their Color Guard team traveled to Washington, D.C., to compete in the Steve Young National Honor Guard Competition during National Police Week in May 2025.
This historic moment marked a significant milestone for the SFPD and brought San Francisco representation to one of the nation’s most respected law enforcement agencies.
The Steve Young National Honor Guard Competition is no ordinary event. Held annually at the U.S. Capitol during National Police Week, it brings together elite law enforcement honor guard teams from across the United States and Canada. These highly dedicated officers gather in our nation’s capital to honor fallen peace officers through ceremonial tributes that demonstrate the precision, discipline, and respect that define their profession.
The competition itself consists of three demanding components: a formal inspection of uniforms and equipment, the posting of the colors, and an eight-minute choreographed routine paying tribute to fallen peace officers. Judges from the U.S. Navy drill team scrutinize every detail, from the knife-sharp creases in uniforms to the precise synchronization of movements during performances.
The team also participated in several key ceremonies, including the solemn Candlelight Vigil honoring officers who lost their lives in the line of duty during 2024, and the nationally televised National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service.
We applaud the SFPD’s Color Guard team, led by Sergeant Maina Tuimavave of Southern Station, for representing the spirit of San Francisco on a national stage, as well as the dedication of all who serve in law enforcement. And we were proud to support the trip’s transportation and lodging.
